"With a timeless soulful voice and self-described “mad honest” lyrics, Joy Crookes has been compared to the likes of Billy Holiday, Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse. Crookes was recognized as a rising star at the 2020 Brit Awards, although she’s been around longer than that. She released her first EP in July of 2017 but credits her performance of "Mother May I Sleep With Danger?" on the global music platform, COLORS, as her big break. Her latest single "Anyone But Me”, debuted atop the UK Asian Top 40 in April 2020.
Success for Joy Crookes is not based on recognition. Her goal is to keep doing her own thing and transcend from lyricist to poet as she blends soul, RnB, trip-hop and pop into her modern soul sound.
For Crookes, songwriting is also storytelling, and she is committed to translating her identity and truth into music. In an interview with dazedigital.com, she states “Music is an amazing way of breaking boundaries and having conversations about topics that are hard to navigate in conversation”. Crooke’s second E.P. Reminiscence, released in 2018, was born after visiting Bangladesh for the first time in her adult life. It celebrates her multicultural identity against the backdrop of the culture of British youth.
The daughter of a Begali mother and an Irish father, she grew up listening to an eclectic mix of genres which she admits is reflected in her art.
